Sometimes conflict develops in the extended family. Communication breaks down between parents and adult children, in-laws, and/or siblings. Family relationships often play a key role in life satisfaction, and being estranged from a family member can be a source of deep pain and regret. While some relationships are so toxic that the healthy choice is to cut ties, far more often family relationships break down because of negative patterns that we get stuck in and just don’t know how to break.
Family relationships can often be repaired by letting go of judgement, setting boundaries, and learning to effectively ask for what we want. A counsellor can help navigate sensitive waters while offering a fresh perspective for all parties.
