Borderline Personality Disorder
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by mood instability, impulsivity, fears of being alone or abandoned, and poor self-image.

For people with BPD, any perceived slight can trigger extreme emotional pain and reactive behaviour. People with BPD often experience unstable relationships, exaggerated thinking, impulsivity, self-injurious behavior, eating disorders, and/or suicide attempts.

BPD is often caused in part by a chronically invalidating childhood environment, meaning that the adults in your life told you (directly or indirectly) that your emotions were wrong. Such experiences can result in an inability to trust your own emotions, leading to negative thoughts, self-doubt, and over-reliance on the opinions of others..
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is the most recognized and evidence-based treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder. To find a counsellor specializing in BPD and DBT, please visit our Counsellors page.
