EMDR Therapy with Loralee Schultz, MACP
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach that helps people process and heal from distressing experiences, traumatic memories, and negative beliefs that may be contributing to emotional difficulties in the present.
When overwhelming or traumatic experiences occur, the brain's natural ability to process information can become disrupted. As a result, memories, emotions, physical sensations, and beliefs associated with those experiences may remain "stuck," continuing to affect how a person feels, thinks, and responds long after the event has passed.
EMDR helps the brain reprocess these experiences in a safe, structured way, allowing distressing memories to become less emotionally overwhelming and enabling healthier beliefs and coping responses to emerge.
EMDR is recognized internationally as an effective treatment for trauma and is endorsed by organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA).

What to Expect During EMDR Therapy
EMDR is a comprehensive, phased therapy process that begins with standard counselling sessions. Early sessions focus on getting to know you, understanding your history, building a strong therapeutic relationship, and helping you develop coping skills and emotional regulation strategies.
During this phase, Loralee will provide education about EMDR and help determine whether the approach is a good fit for your goals and needs. Decisions about moving into active trauma processing are made collaboratively and only when you feel adequately prepared, supported, and emotionally stable.
Once sufficient preparation has occurred, EMDR processing sessions may be introduced. These sessions are often longer than traditional counselling appointments and may be scheduled for up to 90 minutes to allow adequate time for processing and grounding.
Throughout the process, therapy proceeds at a pace that feels safe, manageable, and appropriate for your unique circumstances.
